"The UNESCO World Heritage-listed Castel del Monte was built in the latter half of the 12th century by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Sitting on a remote hillock among endless undulating plains, Castel del Monte is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval architecture, taking its influences from both Classical and Islamic building styles. With your private guide take a look at this ancient fortress that might have originally been used as an astronomical observatory or as an imposing hunting lodge. Its mysterious octagonal base sets it significantly apart from all the other castles in Puglia. Castel del Monte is protected by splendid mythological creatures which adorn the keystones in the inside halls and the coral crushed stone doorframes. The tour continues to the nearby the old town of Trani, a city with a wealth of Medieval and Norman features, such as the amazing Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino (true symbol of the city). This is perhaps the most beautiful and famous Apulian Romanesque church. Building was started in the 11th century and continued for over a hundred years; in the 13th century the tall, sturdy bell tower was added alongside."September 2024
